ECE 22.06, DOT and Snell: what helmet ratings really mean

Most riders never read the little label inside their helmet. That label is a contract. It tells you exactly what testing the helmet survived before someone let you bet your head on it.

Here is what each rating actually means, in plain language.

DOT: the legal minimum

DOT is the United States standard, and you will see it on plenty of helmets sold here. The catch is that DOT is largely self-certified. The manufacturer says it passes, and regulators spot-check after the fact.

It is a real floor, not a ceiling. A DOT-only helmet meets the basic legal bar. It does not tell you the helmet is exceptional.

ECE 22.06: the new gold standard

ECE is the European standard, and the 22.06 update that rolled out recently is the most thorough mass-market test out there right now.

What makes 22.06 better than the old 22.05:

• It tests impacts at more points on the shell, including the edges
• It adds rotational impact testing, which targets the brain injuries that come from oblique hits
• It tests at multiple speeds, both high and low energy

That rotational piece is the big deal. Real crashes are rarely a clean straight-on hit, and rotational force is what does a lot of brain damage.

If a helmet carries an ECE 22.06 label, it has passed the toughest standardized testing widely available today.

Snell: the track-focused extra

Snell is a private, voluntary standard funded by a safety foundation. It uses very high-energy impact tests and is popular for racing.

There is genuine debate here. Snell demands a stiffer shell to pass its high-energy tests, and some researchers argue a slightly softer shell manages the more common lower-energy street crash better. For track days, Snell is reassuring. For the street, a strong ECE 22.06 helmet is an excellent choice.

What to actually look for

• Street riding: prioritize ECE 22.06
• Track days: check your circuit's rules, often Snell or ECE
• Avoid any helmet with no real certification at all
