Your jacket might look armoured and still be hiding cheap foam. Here is how to read CE armour so you know what is really in there.
You bought a jacket with armour in the shoulders and elbows. Great. But do you know whether that armour is rated to actually absorb a crash, or whether it is glorified packing foam?
Most riders never check. Let's fix that, because this is the part that stands between your joints and the pavement.
What CE rating actually measures
CE armour is tested by dropping a heavy striker onto it and measuring how much force passes through to whatever is underneath. The standard is simple to read once you know the numbers:
- Level 1 lets through a lower-protection amount of force on average
- Level 2 lets through roughly half the force of the Level 1 threshold
In plain terms, Level 2 transmits less energy to your body, which means better protection in a serious impact.
Level 2 armour passes about half the impact force to your body compared to the Level 1 limit. That difference shows up where it counts.
Level 1 vs Level 2: the real trade-off
This is not simply "Level 2 is always better and you are a fool for buying Level 1." There is a genuine balance:
- Level 1 is thinner, lighter, more flexible, and more comfortable to wear all day
- Level 2 is bulkier and sometimes stiffer, but absorbs more energy
For high-speed and track riding, Level 2 at the shoulders, elbows, and especially the back is well worth the bulk. For relaxed city riding, quality Level 1 that you actually wear beats Level 2 that you leave at home.
Do not forget the back protector
Here is the trap. Many jackets ship with a thin foam pad where the back protector should go, and that pad is often not rated armour at all. The spine is not a place to cut corners.
Check for a real CE Level 1 or Level 2 back insert, and upgrade it if the jacket came with foam.
What to check before you buy
- 01Look for the CE label and the level on each piece of armour.
- 02Confirm shoulders, elbows, and back are all covered, not just two of the three.
- 03Make sure the armour sits over the joint when you are in your riding position, not when standing in the shop.
Want to know what is hiding in your current jacket? Bring it in and we will check, or shop jackets with proper CE armour. The label takes ten seconds to read and your elbows will never forgive you for skipping it.
